Carnival of Souls (1962) is an atmospheric horror classic directed by Herk Harvey, blending psychological terror with surreal imagery. The story begins when Mary Henry miraculously survives a car accident that claims her friends’ lives. Seeking a fresh start, she moves to a small town to work as a church organist, but her attempt at normalcy quickly unravels. Mary experiences disorienting episodes—moments when the world goes silent and people seem frozen—while visions of a pale, smiling man begin to haunt her.

Drawn to an abandoned lakeside pavilion, Mary becomes entangled in a reality where the line between life and death blurs. The film rejects traditional jump scares, relying instead on unsettling sound design, stark black-and-white cinematography, and an oppressive sense of isolation.
