El tema general de El Pr\u00edncipe es aceptar que los objetivos de los pr\u00edncipes -como la gloria y la supervivencia- pueden justificar el uso de medios inmorales para alcanzar esos fines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>De la correspondencia de Maquiavelo se desprende que en 1513 se distribuy\u00f3 una versi\u00f3n con un t\u00edtulo en lat\u00edn, De Principatibus (De los principados). Sin embargo, la versi\u00f3n impresa no se public\u00f3 hasta 1532, cinco a\u00f1os despu\u00e9s de la muerte de Maquiavelo. Esto se llev\u00f3 a cabo con el permiso del papa de los Medici Clemente VII, pero \"mucho antes, de hecho desde la primera aparici\u00f3n de El Pr\u00edncipe en manuscrito, la controversia se hab\u00eda arremolinado en torno a sus escritos\".<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aunque El Pr\u00edncipe fue escrito como si se tratara de una obra tradicional en el estilo de los espejos para pr\u00edncipes, en general se acept\u00f3 que era especialmente innovador. Ello se debe, en parte, a que est\u00e1 escrita en italiano vern\u00e1culo y no en lat\u00edn, una pr\u00e1ctica que se hab\u00eda hecho cada vez m\u00e1s popular desde la publicaci\u00f3n de la Divina Comedia de Dante y otras obras de la literatura renacentista.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A veces se afirma que El Pr\u00edncipe es una de las primeras obras de la filosof\u00eda moderna, especialmente de la filosof\u00eda pol\u00edtica moderna, en la que la verdad \"efectiva\" se considera m\u00e1s importante que cualquier ideal abstracto. Tambi\u00e9n destaca por entrar en conflicto directo con las doctrinas cat\u00f3licas y escol\u00e1sticas dominantes de la \u00e9poca, en particular las relativas a la pol\u00edtica y la \u00e9tica.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aunque es relativamente breve, el tratado es la obra m\u00e1s recordada de Maquiavelo y la m\u00e1s responsable de que la palabra \"maquiav\u00e9lico\" se utilizara como peyorativo. Incluso contribuy\u00f3 a las modernas connotaciones negativas de las palabras \"pol\u00edtica\" y \"pol\u00edtico\" en los pa\u00edses occidentales. En cuanto al tema, se solapa con los Discursos sobre Livio, mucho m\u00e1s extensos y escritos unos a\u00f1os m\u00e1s tarde.
