All Quiet on the Western Front confronts the brutal reality of modern warfare through the eyes of an ordinary young soldier, stripping away patriotic myths to expose the psychological and physical devastation of World War I.
The novel follows Paul Bäumer, a German teenager who enlists with his classmates after absorbing nationalist rhetoric at school. Once at the front, Paul quickly discovers that war bears no resemblance to the glory promised by authority figures. Daily life becomes a cycle of fear, hunger, camaraderie, and sudden violence, where survival depends as much on luck as skill.
As the story progresses, Paul grows increasingly alienated from civilian life and even from his own past self. Moments of tenderness with fellow soldiers clash with the constant presence of death, revealing how war erodes identity, morality, and hope. The novel does not argue through ideology; instead, it persuades through lived experience, forcing the reader to witness how an entire generation becomes emotionally unmoored.

The novel was an international success but was later banned and burned by the Nazis, who stripped Remarque of his citizenship and forced him into exile.
