The novel follows Paul Bäumer, a German teenager who enlists with his classmates after absorbing nationalist rhetoric at school. Once at the front, Paul quickly discovers that war bears no resemblance to the glory promised by authority figures. Daily life becomes a cycle of fear, hunger, camaraderie, and sudden violence, where survival depends as much on luck as skill.
As the story progresses, Paul grows increasingly alienated from civilian life and even from his own past self. Moments of tenderness with fellow soldiers clash with the constant presence of death, revealing how war erodes identity, morality, and hope. The novel does not argue through ideology; instead, it persuades through lived experience, forcing the reader to witness how an entire generation becomes emotionally unmoored.

Erich Maria Remarque (1898–1970) was a German novelist best known for his powerful anti-war writing. He is most famous for All Quiet on the Western Front (1929), a stark and emotional portrayal of World War I from the perspective of ordinary soldiers, drawn partly from his own experience as a young German infantryman. The novel was an international success but was later banned and burned by the Nazis, who stripped Remarque of his citizenship and forced him into exile.
